The calibre picks the target
A plate rated for rimfire will crater under .308, and steel has a minimum distance before it stops being safe. This axis is the one where getting it wrong costs more than money.
- RifleAR500 and up, 100 yards minimum on steel.
- PistolAR500 at 10 yards, handgun velocities only.
- Shotgunclays and throwers. Not steel.
- Airgun & rimfirelight steel and paper, close range.
- Archeryfoam, bag and block; broadhead-rated where stated.
