B-27 vs B-21 vs FBI-Q: Which Qualification Target?
Most police and security qualification courses name the target they are shot on. Here is what each of the common codes is, so you can match the course to the box.
| Target | Size | What is scored | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| B-27 / B-27E | 23" x 35" (B-27E is the economy version) | Rings from 10 down to 7 on a silhouette, X ring for tie-breaks | NRA Police Pistol Combat at 7, 15, 25 and 50 yards; department qualification |
| B-21E | 23" x 35" | Set by the agency's own version | A 25-yard law-enforcement silhouette with state and agency versions |
| FBI-Q | 23" x 35" | Hits inside the "Q" outline; many academies score the inner boxes higher | FBI-style handgun qualification at training academies |
| B-3 | 10.5" x 12" | Bullseye rings 10 to 6, X ring 0.90" | NRA precision pistol, timed and rapid fire at 50 feet |
Which one do I need? Your course of fire names it. If it says "B-27", either the B-27 or the B-27E qualifies; if it names an agency (a state or a department), ask for that agency's version of the B-21E.
